Happy Holidays to all

Well Christmas has come and gone.  I was fortunate enough to receive a Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM lens as a gift.  Wow, what a difference 77mm of glass at f1.4 makes.  I am still processing many of the family shots I took but here is a quick sample, very sharp, great color and detail.

Although there was alot to like about the Zeiss lens in my last post, I felt that the auto focus and the larger glass were more suited to my needs.

I hope to get some images of Christmas lights and perhaps even get outside for New Years.

Until next time.

Photography presents under the tree

As we approach Christmas, photographers begin to think about what will be under the tree or in their camera bag for the upcoming year.  I recently evaluated two lenses that I was considering as a gift.  The Sigma 50 1.4 was one that was missing from my kit.  A fast prime, with beautiful bokeh and a 75mm dx focal length made for a great addition.  I was immediately interested and I already had the filters to fit the 77mm diameter glass.

What kept me from adding it to my list was the other lens that caught my eye.  The Zeiss 50 1.4 was another great choice  Exquisite build quality, bright clear optics and the old school manual focus made me pause.

Autofocus on the Sigma, manual on the Zeiss.  Filters in hand or the need to buy new ones.

I proceeded to test both lenses on a variety of subjects.  I used various targets in the store, same aperture, speed and focus distance.  I then examined the resulting images on the lcd screen of my D90 at maximum magnification.

This was going to be tougher than I thought.  Both lenses were really sharp, the manual focus on the Zeiss was fun, the Sigma was really fast by itself.

Which one will I be asking Santa for?

I'll update my blog after Christmas.  Until then, I hope to get some holiday light shots up soon.  If you are looking for pictures for nice gifts, please visit my photography website http://www.brianshannonphotography.com/ for a variety of images that can be ordered in notecards, calendars or metallic prints.

Thanks.
